Clay Peck, lead pastor of Grace Place, adopted his teenage daughter from Ukraine in 2011. Since that time, Clay Peck and his wife and son have welcomed Julia into their family and into Grace Place.
Adopting from Ukraine is a unique experience. The process begins when the family completes a dossier of documents that must undergo verification by the family's home state before being sent to Ukraine. After being translated, the dossier goes to the Department for Families and Children in the Ministry for Social Policy of Ukraine (DFC). The DFC typically takes approximately four weeks to review a dossier.
Upon approval of a family's dossier, the family receives an official invitation to visit Ukraine. Families do not yet receive photos or videos of children but must first travel to the DFC, where officials discuss child profiles with a Ministry psychologist. After the parents select a potential match, they travel to the child's orphanage to visit with the youngster.
If the family decides that the child is a match, they may begin the adoption process. Potential parents also have the choice to decline and request a referral for a second child. The entire process typically takes two trips, separated by a waiting period. Some families choose to remain in Ukraine through this period.
